CSNS Holds First Polarized Neutron Advisory Workshop in Dongguan

2019-12-03

The first CSNS Polarized Neutron Advisory Workshop was successfully held on Nov. 23-26 in Dongguan, Guangdong Province. The workshop was jointly hosted by the Dongguan Campus of the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) and the Dongguan Science and Technology Bureau.

The workshop was the first in China focused on polarized neutrons. The workshop provided a platform for researchers to share ideas and experience about sample environment (see note) and elements of polarized neutrons (see note). [delete reference to instruments here – see note] More than 30 experts from around the world shared their experience on neutron instrumentation and scattering. They represented institutions and universities such as the Institute of Physics (China), the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), France’s Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), Switzerland’s Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), and Germany’s Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS).]

CSNS Project Manager Prof. Hesheng Chen delivered warm opening remarks, followed by a brief introduction to Dongguan City by Ms. Lin Zheng, a local government representative. The workshop comprised three scientific sessions and 19 presentations. Speakers talked about the concept, development, application and experimental challenges of polarized neutrons; aspects of quantum condensed matter research; the use of Neutron Spin Echo and Larmor labeling of neutrons; and the overall physical design of major labs.

Attendees also discussed the development of neutron polarization in China, providing useful suggestions for the construction and operation of neutron polarization equipment at CSNS.
