Abstract:
The European XFEL is a Free Electron laser using the principle of Self Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE). It starts at the DESY campus in Hamburg and ends after 3.5km in the City of Schenefeld, Germany. It is completely installed in subterranean tunnels. Three undulator systems with length up to 220m cover the wavelength range from 0.5 to 50 Angstroems. With a total magnetic length of 455m they are the largest worldwide. The production of the total of 91 undulators in specs and in time was a special challenge. The presentation gives an overview over the undulator systems and the production strategy.
After completion first lasing was observed May 2nd, 2017. Since September 1st, 2018 it is in officially in operation. Results will be presented as well.
About the speaker:
Dr. Joachim Pflueger is a leading scientist at the European XFEL. In 1983 he got his PhD at Forschungszentrum (FZ) Karlsruhe, Germany. As a Post-Doc at BESSY, 2004-2007 he pioneered the design and construction of the first undulator for the BESSY I storage ring: It was an early in vacuum device. In October 1987 he started at HASYLAB at DESY and until 2009 he was involved in all developments and upgrades using Insertion Device at DESY: DORIS III upgrade 1988-1993; Hard X-ray undulator for PETRA II 1993; the Undulator for the Tesla Test Facility FEL 1994-2001; the Undulator for FLASH 2002-2005; and the PETRA III undulators 2005-2008. In parallel he was one of the pioneers of the European XFEL and since 1999 involved in preparation activities for the European XFEL. In April 2009 after the foundation of the XFEL company, he took over the responsibility for the construction of the undulator systems for the European XFEL.
His research interest is development and design of Insertion Device Technology for Synchrotron Radiation Sources and Free Electron Lasers.
