The Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) held its 2010 Workshop on Strategic Planning from October 15 to 16, in Beijing. The main theme of the workshop was to discuss the IHEP plans on Innovation

2020, which was put forward by CAS and was approved by the central government.

Innovation 2020 is a ten-year development plan made by CAS, which requires all the research institutes under CAS should have their own Innovation 2020 plans. It is against this background that IHEP starts to plan its own “Innovation 2020”.

Academician Chen Senyu chaired the workshop, and stressed the significance at the beginning. Chen Hesheng, Director of IHEP, introduced to delegates the CAS Innovation 2020 and the basic science projects during the twelfth five-year plan. While pointing out the key projects and the research fields in which IHEP could join, he emphasized the upgrade and construction of the Yuquanlu Base, the Beijing Comprehensive Center and the Innovation Center in Dongguan. To support the above, he emphasized the importance of keeping a sharp edge on the relevant technologies and the cultivattion of young talents.

Accelerator, physics and technology divisions delivered their plans and voiced their opinions irrespectively. Heated discussions followed, expecially on how to arrange the priorities. Many valuable suggestions were put forward. Prof. Chen Hesheng summarized the workshop.
