CAS leaders inspect YBJ Cosmic Ray Observatory in Tibet

2010-08-12

Prof. LI Jiayang and Prof. ZHAN Wenlong, Vice Presidents of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), made an inspection tour on Yangbajing (YBJ) Cosmic Ray Observatory in Tibet on August 5th, 2010.

Dr. HU Hongbo from the Institute of High Energy Physics briefly introduced the scientific achievements of China’s cosmic ray research over the past 20 years. He then mentioned the difficulties with which the observatory was confronted at present. Other researchers from the Purple Mountain Observatory and the Southeast University working with the YBJ Observatory briefed about their research progress.

The presidents spoke highly of the achievements of the YBJ Project, especially of the paper published on “Science” in 2006. Prof. ZHAN Wenlong hoped that the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO Project) could get approved during the Twelfth Five-Year plan.

With that, the on-going problems could be hopefully settled during the process. They encouraged the research team to make further efforts to build the YBJ observatory into a strong supporting platform for the multi-disciplinary studies.
