Academician XIE Jialin was born in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province in 1920. In the year of 1943, he graduated from the Department of Physics, Yanjing University and then he went to the United States in 1947 to further his studies. During his stay, he obtained M.S. degree from the Department of Physics, California Institute of Technology and  Ph.D degree from the Department of Physics, Stanford University.

Breaking through obstacles, he returned to China in 1955. He started to work at the Institute of Atomic Energy as deputy director of the Accelerator Department and  then at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) as associate director of IHEP and  project manager of the  Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC). He was elected as the member of the  Chinese Academy of Sciences In 1980.

Over 50 years of his scientific research, Academician XIE  Jialin has made many outstanding achievements in the fields of accelerator physics, accelerator technology and  free electron laser.

From 1951 to 1955, he chaired the construction of an accelerator at Michael Reese, Chicago, which was a medical accelerator with the highest energy (45 MeV) at that time in the world.

In 1964, after the successful R&D of various components ,  he accomplished the building of a 30 MeV electron linac , which was the first one ever built in China. From 1981 to 1986,  he was  manager of the BEPC Project, and was directly in charge of the project technology. He made important very important contributions to the final success of the BEPC.

In 1987,  he proposed the construction of the Beijing Free Electron Laser Facility. With the funding support from the State 863 High Tech Program, he succeeded in building China’s first infrared free electron laser which produced spontaneous emission in May of 1993. After those built in the U.S. and the Western Europe, this was the first infrared free electron laser built in Asia.

Besides his research, he has cultivated many talents for the country,  published dozens of papers in noted domestic and foreign journals.

Harboring with deep affection for his country, Academician XIE Jialin has devoted himself whole-heartedly  to the development of high energy physics in China. At the age of 90, he is still working at the front of  his field. Let's congratulate on his success, and wish him to go further by making even greater contributions to his motherland.
