The Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) hosted the International Workshop on Accelerator Driven Sub-critical System (ADS)

from July 7th to 8th in Bejing. Present at the meeting were over 60 experts from both foreign and domestic institutions.

Dr. CHEN Hesheng, IHEP Director, introduced the current scientific activities at IHEP, the developing plans for particle physics and ADS in China. Prof. Carlo RUBBIA, the Italian particle physicist and Nobel Prize winner, delivered a report on the sub-critical thorium reactor, in which he explained the thorium resource, thorium reactor techniques and the application of nuclear energy.

Dr. Hamid A？t Abderrahim, from the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK？CEN), introduced the MYRRHA project. Three experts from Aker Solutions reported about their activities on accelerator driven thorium reactor.

Dr. ZHAN Wenlong, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), made a report entitled “Roadmap of ADS Development in China”. His report covered the accelerator-related mega-facilities, development of nuclear energy, and future plans for ADS in China.Several domestic experts also delivered reports on the subject.

During the workshop, Prof. LU Yongxiang, CAS President, met with Prof. RUBBIA. Extended discussions over future collaboration on ADS were conducted.

The workshop was a full success; it provided the experts with a stage of communication and laid a sound basis for future collaboration in the field.
