CAS Vice President Met with CERN Guest

Prof. Zhan Wenlong, Vice President of CAS met with Dr. Pauss, Head of CERN External Relations Office on January 18th, 2010, who is now visiting Beijing to exchange views and to have discussions on further enlarging the collaboration between China’s science circles and CERN (Conseil European Pour Recherches Nucleaires).

The Vice President first expressed his warm welcome to Dr. Pauss and introduced on the Academy, particularly on the status and progress of the mega-science facilities under CAS.

Dr. Pauss briefed about the operation and progress of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) since its recovery from the accident and about its future plans for upgrade. She also introduced the mechanism of organization of CERN, which for years has been composed of Full Member States, Associate Member States and Observer States. Dr. Pauss further expounded their rights and obligations and the CERN’s enlargement policy.

In response, Prof. Zhan said that CAS would be very happy to strengthen collaboration with CERN as Prof. Lu Yongxiang suggested during his meeting with the CERN Director General in 2009. He emphasized that there would be great potentials to further the collaboration, Accelerator Driven Sub-critical System (ADS) was cited as one possibility. Prof. Yifang Wang, IHEP Deputy Director, joined the meeting.
