Unite as One, Strive for More Achievements in 2005

2005-01-01

  Remarks from the Director

Farewell to the year of 2004 and welcome to the year of 2005!

At the turn of the old to the new, I would, on behalf of the Institute of High Energy Physics, express my warmest greetings and best wishes for the new year to all the IHEP staff!

Over the past year, IHEP has continuously deepened reforms in all fields and has made remarkable achievements in key areas of research and “Knowledge Innovation”. BEPC/BES has successfully finished its 15-year running, the BESII physics analysis has obtained new results, BSRF has completed over 400 experiments on various subjects with a batch of important results achieved. The BEPCII Project is under full swing now, the first battle of the Project - Linac dismantlement, installation and commissioning - has been successfully completed with the SR running fully recovered. Our goal of winning the first battle has been materialized. At the same time; the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Experimental Station, the R & D of the Hard X-ray Modulator Telescope, the R & D of the key technologies of the Intense Beam Proton Accelerator, the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, particle and nuclear physics and the research and application of nuclear analysis techniques have all witnessed great progress over the past year. All those achievements should be attributed to the joint efforts of all the IHEP staff, including those working on technical support, administration and logistics, to whom I would, on behalf of the Directorate, extend my warm greetings.

In the coming new year, we shall have new development opportunities and great challenges as well. Firstly, we must ensure a high-performance dedicated SR running, striving for more meaningful results. Secondly, the BEPCII Project shall enter into its decisive phase - the dismantlement of the current storage ring, the R & D of the new storage ring and the installation of the double-ring. Meanwhile, the R & D of the BESIII shall also enter into its key phase. That is why we say the year 2005 is decisive for the BEPCII Project. We must win simply because we can not afford to lose!

Currently, many problems and difficulties exist in the quality and schedule of key equipments’ R & D, which remain to be solved. All the Project staff are requested to sum up experience and draw lessons, in particular those derived from the Linac dismantlement and installation. We have to further strengthen quality control, seriously implement the CPM scheme, and prepare for more severe challenges. At the same time, we should actively carry out various non-accelerator physics experiments, actively push forward the approval and the R & D of such important projects as the Spallation Neutrino Source, Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, Modulator Telescope and vigorously develop multi- disciplinary research based on our mega-science facilities. The industrialization of high technologies is another sector in which we should strengthen our efforts. The year 2005 is the last year of the second phase of the CAS Knowledge Innovation Program, we should continue to deepen the reform, summarize our work in the second phase and initiate planning for the third phase. We shoud lose no time in making a medium-and-long term plan, laying a solid foundation for the sustainable development of IHEP.

Looking back, we feel proud of what we have achieved. Looking ahead, we face heavy tasks and high social expectations. Let us work in a down-to-earth manner, advance and innovate, win the decisive battle of 2005, and compose a new and beautiful page in the development of IHEP!

                                                                   CHEN Hesheng
