Mr. Cao Jianlin Met with Dr. Rolf-Dieter Heuer

  Invited by Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dr. Rolf-Dieter Heuer, Director-General of European Nuclear Research Center (CERN) and Ms. Felicitas Pauss, Co-ordinator for External Relations of CERN visited China from April 21 to 24. On April 22th, Mr.Cao Jianlin, Vice Minister of Ministry of Science and Technology met with Dr. Heuer.

  On behalf of Mr. Wan Gang, Minister of Ministry of Science and Technology, Cao Jianlin extended warm welcome to Dr. Heuer and Ms. Pauss. He said CERN had been in close cooperation with Chinese physical communities, especially with the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) for years and he hoped that such cooperation could be further strengthened.

  Dr. Heuer thanked Mr. Cao for his meeting and warm welcome. During the meeting Dr. Heuer introduced the cooperation between CERN and Chinese physical communities, and the new progress on LHC, which will soon ushers in an exciting new stage. In the past the Chinese side mainly participated in the construction of detectors and now it’s time to harvest and a good opportunity to strengthen cooperation between both sides. Dr. Heuer also welcomed China’s active participation in the projects of improving accelerators.

  Mr. Cao and Dr. Heuer discussed transferring spin-off technologies to industries. Examples of accelerators being widely used in hospitals were mentioned. Other topics of mutual interest were also discussed. Talking about future cooperation with CERN, Mr. Cao said that China is willing to participate in and expand the cooperation, but funding is an essential factor. For large projects, consent from higher authorities and the Ministry of Finance is needed.

  Mr. Zhang Xian’en, Director-General of the Department of Basic Research, Mr. Wang Yifang, Deputy Director of IHEP, and other people concerned attended the meeting.
