PNCMI 2025 Held at Dongguan
On February 24, the 15th Polarized Neutrons for Condensed-Matter Investigations (PNCMI 2025) was held in Dongguan. The conference focused on the construction of polarized neutron platforms both domestically and internationally, as well as the latest applications of polarized neutrons in condensed matter research, while exploring the future development of the polarized neutron field. Since its inception in 1996 in Dubna, Russia, the conference has been held biennially, and this marks its first time being hosted in China. The event was organized by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Spallation Neutron Source Science Center, and the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Extreme Conditions. The event attracts over 70 experts from more than 20 research institutions and universities worldwide.
Polarized neutron technology is an advanced experimental technique and methodology actively developed by major neutron sources internationally. It is an irreplaceable tool for studying magnetic thin films, novel magnetic storage materials, high-temperature superconductors, and exotic quantum materials, and has been successfully applied in research on magnetic, strongly correlated, nano, spintronic, polymer, and biological materials.
Prof. TONG Xin, Executive Chair of the conference and Deputy Director of the Dongguan Campus of IHEP CAS, explained that the country's first polarized neutron experimental platform has been established at the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), completing the full-chain development of polarized neutron technology.
Prof. WANG Sheng, Deputy Director of IHEP, and Chief Manager of the CSNS-II project, said that at least half of the 20 CSNS neutron instruments are designed to incorporate polarized neutron capabilities. He also encouraged the young researchers to take this opportunity to systematically learn the fundamental techniques and theories of polarized neutrons, while exploring cutting-edge issues in polarized neutron scattering research and applications.
Being part of the Dongguan High-Level Talent Event Series, PNCMI 2025 has received strong support from the local government. The conference showcased the scientific research capabilities of the CSNS and Dongguan's innovative research environment to domestic and international experts. It also provided a high-end platform for top-tier talent exchange, collaboration, and academic discussions among industries in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and international research institutions.
