Dirac Prize Laureate and Former CERN Director Professor Luciano Maiani Visits IHEP Colloquium
On October 22, 2024, Dirac Prize laureate and former director of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Professor Luciano Maiani, was invited to IHEP Colloquium, delivering an outstanding academic lecture to the attendees. The forum was hosted by Professor CAO Jun, Director of the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and attracted numerous experts and scholars from the field of particle physics. Over 752,000 viewers participated in the event via live streaming.
During the forum, Professor Maiani provided an in-depth review of the development of the particle physics Standard Model, detailing the historical progression of this theoretical framework from its inception to its experimental validation. The Standard Model of particle physics is not only a cornerstone of modern physics but also offers essential theoretical support for understanding the fundamental components of the universe.
Moreover, Professor Maiani offered insights into the future directions of particle physics experiments. He emphasized that despite the significant success of the Standard Model, many mysteries remain unsolved, such as the nature of dark matter and the origins of the universe. He urged the global scientific community to enhance collaboration and leverage the next generation of particle accelerators and innovative experimental techniques to further advance the field of particle physics.
This forum provided a valuable platform for attendees to exchange ideas, sparking enthusiasm and reflection on the future of particle physics research. Participants expressed that Professor Maiani’s lecture not only broadened their academic horizons but also provided new inspiration and directions for their research endeavours.
