IHEP Holds Kickoff Meeting of National Key Research and Development Project "ATLAS Detector Upgrade"

2024-07-09

On July 5, the kickoff meeting of the National Key Research and Development Project "ATLAS Detector Upgrade" led by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was held at IHEP.

The project expert group is chaired by Prof. LI Jin (IHEP), with members including Prof. LI Qiang (Peking University), Prof. LI Zhankui (Institute of Modern Physics, CAS), Prof. LIU Jianbei (University of Science and Technology of China), Prof. SUN Xiangming, Prof. ZHOU Daicui (Central China Normal University), Prof. XIANG Dao (Shanghai Jiao Tong University) and Prof. HENG Yuekun, Prof. OUYANG Qun (IHEP).

More than 20 people attended the meeting, including Prof. WANG Jianchun, deputy director of the Experimental Physics Division, project leader Prof. Joao Guimaraes da Costa, key members of the project and related administration departments. The meeting was chaired by Prof. LI Jin.

Prof. WANG Jianchun delivered a speech on behalf of the Experimental Physics Division, warmly welcoming the leaders and experts present, and expressing that the division will actively cooperate with the project implementation, provide comprehensive support and supervision, and ensure the project is completed on time and with high quality.

Joao Guimaraes da Costa, on behalf of the project team, thanked the leaders and experts present for their support, emphasizing that this project is a key technology research based on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), providing important support for the Phase-II upgrade of the ATLAS detector. He hoped that the experts would provide valuable opinions and suggestions to help the project team further improve the implementation plan and jointly promote the smooth realization of the project goals.

Subsequently, the project leader and each task leader reported on the implementation plan of the project and topics. The expert group carefully listened to the reports of the project team and provided constructive opinions and suggestions on key issues to be addressed, technical routes, assessment indicators, etc., unanimously agreeing to the implementation plan.

The project leader stated that they will focus on key tasks and key technologies in response to the opinions and suggestions of the experts, continuously enhance the research level, ensure the high-quality completion of the project according to the timeline and project requirements, and further enhance China's international influence in the research and development of state-of-the-art technologies and international cooperation in major scientific facilities.

Project Introduction:

The "ATLAS Detector Upgrade" project is led by IHEP, jointly undertaken by the University of Science and Technology of China, Nanjing University, Shandong University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The project focuses on the research related to the following detectors. The team will complete the development of high-granularity timing detector, part of silicon tracking detector, and part of muon detector, and will cover the full process from development, production of key components domestically to the final detector integration and commissioning at CERN.
