IHEP Successfully Hosts MEDSI 2023
The 12th International Conference on Mechanical Engineering Design of Synchrotron Radiation Equipment and Instrumentation (MEDSI 2023) was held in Beijing from Nov. 6–10.
MEDSI 2023 was hosted by the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS),a project of the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The conference was chaired by Yuhui Dong, deputy director of IHEP and executive deputy manager of HEPS. Ping He, head of the HEPS Accelerator Division, was chairman of the Scientific Program Committee. The conference focused on photon delivery and related processes, accelerators, new facility design and upgrades, simulation, precision mechanics, and core technology developments. The conference program included keynote and contributed talks, poster presentation sessions, and industrial exhibitions.
Keynote and contributed talks were presented by 42 delegates—from Sirius, ESRF, MAX-IV, ALBA, DESY, SOLEIL, SLS, HLS, HEPS, HALF, SHINE and other synchrotron radiation and free electron laser facilities around the world. More than 370 attendees conducted in-depth discussions and exchange on the development of cutting-edge technologies in the fields of X-ray optics, precision mechanics, ultra-high vacuums and so on. Two Best Poster Prizes were awarded among more than 150 posters. Becky Lin from Australia’s Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and Jonathan Kelly from Diamond Light Source won the “Best Young Delegate Poster Prize” and “Best Poster Prize,” respectively. In addition, the conference also received strong support from the President’s International Fellowship Initiative program of CAS, the journal Radiation Detection Technology and Methods (RDTM), Lightsources.org, and more than 40 industry exhibitors worldwide, such as Beijing He-Racing Technology Co., Ltd. and France’s Optique Peter.
Contributions will be edited and published as JACoW (Joint Accelerator Conferences Website) Proceedings. Five editors from the JACoW team attended the conference to promote timely communication between editors and authors in order to efficiently collect and edit the conference papers.
The local organizing committee received high praise from delegates and from the International Organizing Committee (IOC), which met to discuss plans for the 13th MEDSI Conference, election of the IOC chair, MEDSI Early Career Engineering School 2024 and more. At the closing ceremony, Brad Mountford of ANSTO and Carles Colldelram of ALBA, IOC chairmen, addressed the conference. They said they hoped MEDSI conferences would enable collaboration on cutting-edge instrumentation and technology and drive rapid advancement in the field of synchrotron radiation and free-electron laser light sources worldwide. After the conclusion of MEDSI 2023, attendees also visited HEPS and the Platform of Advanced Photon Source Technology R&D (PAPS) in Huairou District, Beijing.
MEDSI, which was first held in 2000, is the most important professional conference in the field of mechanical engineering for synchrotron radiation and free electron laser facilities. It is held every two years and has been hosted by synchrotron radiation light sources such as APS in the United States, ESRF in Europe, SPring-8 in Japan, and SOLEIL in France. HEPS, the host of MEDSI 2023, is the first high-energy, fourth-generation synchrotron radiation light source under construction in China. This year’s conference not only showcased China’s technological achievements in the design and construction of synchrotron radiation facilities, but also promoted the further development of China’s technology in the field of synchrotron radiation and free-electron laser facilities.
The 13th MEDSI Conference will be hosted by MAX-IV Light Source in Lund, Sweden in 2025.
