Spallation Neutron Experts Review CSNS Progress

2018-11-15

The International Advisory Committee of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) held its 10th annual review meeting at IHEP’s Dongguan Campus from Nov. 12-14.

Nine senior scientists from world-famous research institutions, including the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), the European Spallation Source (ESS) and the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), attended the meeting and reviewed CSNS’s progress and future plans.

Prof. Chen Hesheng, CSNS project director, gave an overall report on CSNS that covered its operational status and user cultivation. He also briefly introduced CSNS’s achievements this year as well as plans for a future upgrade. On behalf of CSNS, he also expressed gratitude for the committee's support over the last 10 years.

Wang Sheng, Liang Tianjiao and Wu Qingbiao also gave reports on their respective subsystems. The reviewers listened to a total of 22 detailed reports and conducted thorough discussions with CSNS personnel. The committee said the project has made remarkable progress since the last review meeting. Reviewers also offered valuable suggestions and comments about key issues such as facility operation, user development and radiation safety, especially in the development of the next suite of neutron instruments and in the beam power upgrade. They also toured the linac and ring tunnel, the target station and instrument hall.
