The Compact Muon Solenoid （CMS）Collaboration awarded Prof. Chen Mingshui, a scientist from the Institute of High Energy Physics, the 2017 CMS Young Researcher Prize at CERN on June 19.

Prof. Chen was recognized for his sustained and critical contributions to the installation and commissioning of the CSC muon system, the discovery of the Higgs boson in its ZZ(*) channel and the measurement of its properties via the combination of all pertaining results.

Started in 2013, the CMS Young Researcher’s Prize is awarded to CMS members who are less than around eight years into their careers after the completion of their PhD or an equivalent qualification.

The Prize recognizes their outstanding achievements and is awarded to at least three members who have made a very significant and sustained contribution to CMS over many years in any area of the experiment (hardware, software, technical, analysis, etc.).

Each awardee receives a medal as well as a cash prize of CHF 2500. The medal itself is made out of a piece of the CMS magnet’s conductor.

Chen graduated from Tsinghua University in 2004 and got his Ph.D degree at IHEP in 2009. As a key member of the CMS Higgs group, Chen mainly engages in measurements of the properties of the Higgs particle and searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model. He was a co-convener of the CMS Higgs combination group in 2014 and 2015, and he now co-convenes a joint working group from the ATLAS and CMS experiments and the theory community on Higgs properties. As a CMS member, he has co-authored more than 600 papers.
