IHEP Annual Open Day 2017
IHEP’s Annual Open Day for 2017 was held at the Yuquan campus on May 20. More than 1300 visitors, including students from middle schools, research institutions and universities across Beijing, took advantage of this opportunity to explore the mysteries of the universe at the smallest and largest scales.
The day started with an opening speech given by Prof. Pan Weimin, Deputy Director of IHEP, followed by lectures on BEPCII, the HXMT project, the High Energy Photon Source and the China Spallation Neutron Source. The speech and lectures were also broadcast over a live webcast.
Visitors had the chance to explore the BEPCII accelerator tunnel, the BESIII detector, the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility, and other facilities including the CAS Key Laboratory for Nuclear Analytical Techniques, the IHEP Key Laboratory for Particle Astrophysics, the IHEP Computing Center, and the IHEP Auditorium.
A group of young scientists headed by Prof. Tamer Tolba organized four interesting scientific experiments for visiting students. They were able to “see” cosmic rays, to measure the diameter of a single hair, and to conduct experiments on Tesla coils and a Mendocino motor.
Some translated scientific books were also available for purchase during the Open Day. The authors attended the sales exhibition and offered to sign books for those who bought them on-site.
