Seminar on Improving BEPCII Luminosity Held
2016 was a fruitful year for the Upgraded Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPCII), as its luminosity reached its design parameters of 1×1033cm-2s-1 at 1.89 GeV, after six and a half years of hard work. BEPCII’s next task is to provide more data for the BESIII experiment as it runs in collision mode. To this end, scientists and technicians from IHEP’s Accelerator Division recently participated in a seminar to discuss ways of improving the collider luminosity.
Prof. XING Jun introduced the operating status of BEPCII from 2016 to 2017. Prof. Yu Chenghui and Prof. He Kanglin then listed the necessary conditions for top-up injection for collision mode operation, and the difficulties and challenges to the BESIII detector when top-up mode is used.
Participants then discussed the problems encountered during the current beam commissioning, ways to improve the luminosity, and future commissioning plans. Prof. Qin Qing, head of the Accelerator Division, urged the research team for each sub-system to give a timeline for improvements and complete all necessary upgrades during the summer maintenance period.
