IHEP Delegates Participate in ICHEP2016

2016-08-16

The 38th International Conference on High Energy Physics (ICHEP2016) was held from August 3rd to 10th in Chicago, USA. Over 20 physicists from the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) attended the conference, from research fields ranging from theoretical physics to accelerators, detectors and different experimental projects. Mr. HONG Lei, the new Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Chicago, met with some of the IHEP delegation during the conference.

During the conference, IHEP delegates presented one plenary talk, nearly 20 parallel talks and several posters. Several of IHEP’s leading scientists also acted as conveners for the parallel sessions. The 20-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) developed by IHEP for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) were shown as part of the industrial exhibition, and drew attention from experiments and businesses interested in collaboration and purchase. One of the editors from Chinese Physics C was also at ICHEP to represent the journal, which was one of this year’s conference sponsors.

On August 10th, the Commission on Particles and Fields of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) presented the 2016 Young Scientist Award to Dr. WEN Liangjian for his original contributions to the physics of neutrinos, and in particular, to the discovery of the non-zero neutrino mixing angle θ13. This is the first time that the award has been given to a particle physicist from the Chinese mainland.

During a panel discussion session on future facilities, Prof. WANG Yifang, IHEP director, described plans for the China Electron Positron Collider (CEPC), while other directors from CERN, KEK and Fermilab discussed the other possible future projects such as International Linear Collider (ILC), the Compact Linear Collider ( CLIC ) and the Future Circular Collider (FCC).

A joint China-Chicago networking event was organized during the conference. At the three-hour session, Chinese participants from universities and research institutions met with American scientists from the Chicago region and discussed future collaboration opportunities.

ICHEP is a focal point of the field of particle physics, bringing together experimentalists and theorists from around the world to share the latest advances in particle physics, astrophysics/cosmology and accelerator science, and to discuss plans for major future facilities. It was first held in 1950, and has been biennial since 1960.
