Scientists optimize antineutrino detector design for JUNO

On April 7, the detector team at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) held a seminar to optimize the design of the antineutrino detector at the experiment. Experts from the Institute of High Energy Physics, universities and industry were invited to join the discussion.

The main structure of the antineutrino detector consists of a large plexiglass sphere and a stainless steel tank. The plexiglass sphere will be the largest in the world, with a diameter of 35.4 meters, and has a design lifetime of 30 years, which is a great challenge for the research team.

At the meeting, Prof. HENG Yuekun, Deputy Director of the JUNO Experiment, introduced the design requirements and progress of the detector. Delegates delivered their different ideas to optimize the design. After listening to the reports, experts discussed the feasibility of the calculation methods, difficulty of construction, budget and precision control. They also shared past experience and suggestions on how to address the challenges faced.

Further detector design work will now go ahead based on the outcome of the seminar.
