First WHEPS Successfully Held
The Weihai High Energy Physics School (WHEPS), organized by Shandong University and jointly sponsored by the Center of Excellence and Innovation in Particle Physics Frontiers under CAS and the Innovation Center of Particle Physics and Interactions under MOE, was held in Weihai Campus of Shandong University on August 2-10, 2015.
Eight noted physicists from BNL, CERN, Geneva University, IHEP and Iowa University were invited as teachers to give lectures at the school. Students attending the school were from IHEP, the University of Science and Technology of China, the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shandong University, Nanjing University and Qufu Normal University.
The school lasted nine days. Its courses included electro-weak theory and new physics, QCD, hadron physics, neutrino physics, dark matter detection, accelerator physics and electronics. The students spoke highly of the school and said that they benefited a lot from the courses. WHEPS is one of the actions taken by the two centers to jointly cultivate talents for the future development o f high energy physics in China. The school is planned to be held once every year from 2015.
The Center of Excellence and Innovation in Particle Physics Frontiers under CAS was founded in 2014 and the Innovation Center of Particle Physics and Interactions under MOE was founded in 2013. Both centers aim to study the deep structure of matter and its interactions, striving to cultivate a batch of talents of international impact and to achieve remarkable progress in neutrino physics, hadron physics, electro-weak physics, dark matter detection, accelerator and detector technologies.
