2015 ICFA Mini-workshop on High Field Magnets for PP Colliders Held in Shanghai

2015-07-02

The 2015 ICFA Mini-workshop on High Field Magnets for PP Colliders hosted by IHEP and organized by Shanghai Jiaotong University and Shanghai Superconducting Science & Technology Co. Ltd was held on June 14-17, 2015 on the Xuhui campus of the Shanghai Jiaotong University.

More than 50 people from China, U.S., Japan and Italy attended the meeting. The meeting mainly discussed the needs of high field magnets by the future circular proton colliders and the related technologies, including superconducting materials, conceptual design of 16-20 T high field magnets and future plans for development.

The CEPC-SPPC construction plan by phases was proposed in Sept. 2012 in our country. The SPPC would use colliding energies beyond 70 TeV to carry out studies in energy frontiers beyond the standard model. The magnets with fields higher than 20 T are beyond the reach of the current technologies, which is the greatest difficulty of the project. Cooperative efforts are being made at home and abroad to push the development of high field magnet technologies. Our country has been very active in those cooperative efforts and has started R&D studies based upon our own industries.

By this meeting, the cooperation between the laboratories and the industries in high field magnets has been strengthened. The high field magnet technology will be not only needed by the SPPC but also by industries, such as wind power and medical imaging, etc.
