President of HKUST Visits CSNS

A delegation headed by CHEN Fanchang, President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), visited the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) on May 27th, 2015. Other members of the delegation included Vice President of HKUST LI Xingwei, Director of the Institute for Advanced Research, HKUST DAI Yunhai and Director of the Physics and Materials Department,the City University of Hong Kong WANG Xunli.

CHEN and his entourage were first shown the CSNS model. CAS Academician CHEN Hesheng briefly introduced the CSNS construction status, science considerations and its applications in the future. The guests toured Hall No.2 for measurements, Linac hall and its tunnel, storage ring and the target.

After the site tour, an informal seminar was held. CHEN Hesheng gave a talk on the CSNS Project. He commented that the CSNS has provided a good opportunity for the Hong Kong science circles to develop and study neutron science. CSNS hopes to strengthen its cooperation with the Hong Kong science circles and welcomes the Hong Kong universities to build “Hong Kong Spectrometer” at CSNS. A talk about the CSNS spectrometer in the first phase and its future plans was given by Liang Tianjiao.

WANG Xunli from the City University of Hong Kong delivered a talk on the “Community Development and Hong Kong’s Participation at CSNS”. In his talk, he suggested uniting the potential users of the four Hong Kong universities to push the planning and construction of the“Hong Kong Spectrometer”. Both sides discussed the collaboration. The HK guests spoke highly of the CSNS developments and its role in promoting neutron science and applications. President CHEN expressed that the HKUST would try its best to look for financial support and to actively communicate with the HK SAR Government, promoting the early realization of the dream of the HK science circles to build the “Hong Kong Spectrometer at CSNS.
