WAN Gang, Vice Chairman of CPPCC and Minister for Science and Technology, visited the Daya Bay Neutrino Experiment Station on November 15.
During his visit, WAN listened to a report by Wang Yifang, Director of Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, on the introduction and future development of IHEP, including an introduction to the Daya Bay neutrino experiment and Jiangmen neutrino experiment, and the plan for a global big science research center and international science town led by the Circular Electron Positron Collider.
WAN pointed out that the Chinese government has always put great emphasis on fundamental science research. We should not expect that every result of fundamental research has a major applicable significance, but so long as we understand the technology, we can grasp and make the best of it. Thus, we should be audacious in planning and application, and be cautious with our work. As a moderately developed country, our contribution to the world relies on our scientific breakthroughs. After years of development, China is now formulating the new “two centenary” development strategies. So, we have the ability to stand on the high ground of science, which requires persistent effort, an innovative mind, and pioneering spirit.
WAN stated that once it has reached a certain development level, a nation should have a broader horizon and higher ambition, and should have the courage to take the lead in certain areas. He also pinpointed that further discussion can be conducted in regards to the Circular Electron Positron Collider and international science town during the formulation of the “13th Five Year Plan”.
QIN Wei, president of the Guangzhou branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, ZHANG Xiaomin, Vice Chairman of the Shenzhen People’s Political Consultative Conference, PENG Yiqi, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Basic Research, Ministry of Science and Technology, YE Yujiang, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Development Planning, Ministry of Science and Technology and other leaders also accompanied Minister Wan during the visit.
