IHEP and Nanjing University launch talent class for particle and nuclear physics

2014-05-07

The Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) and Nanjing University (NJU) have jointly launched a talent class for particle and nuclear physics. A signing ceremony was held in the library of the Nanjing University Xianlin campus on April 30, presided over by Prof. WANG Yifang, IHEP Director and Prof. CHEN Jun, NJU President.

Prof. CHEN pointed out that this cooperation was of great significance to NJU. Apart from bringing in valuable resources from outside the campus, the launch of the class would greatly improve the educational quality of the undergraduate students and promote the development of physics   at NJU.

Prof. WANG expressed his appreciation to the university for cultivating many talented students for IHEP. He admitted that in recent years, although the state has invested a lot of money in particle physics research, and IHEP has undertaken a number of major science projects, they have been faced with a lack of high-quality graduate students. By launching this joint talent class, both sides can play to their respective advantages, nurture high-quality students, and send more of these talented students to particle physics and nuclear physics, theoretical physics, synchrotron radiation, particle astrophysics, cosmology and other disciplines.

Before the signing ceremony, Prof. WANG delivered a talk entitled Neutrinos and Particle Physics Research in China in the university.

The School of Physics at Nanjing University is one of first physics departments established in China, dated back to 1920 when NJU was known as Nanjing Higher Normal College. Since its pioneering days, the School of Physics has made great contributions to China's development and has since then become one of the best in the country. The Physics Education Research Centre explores innovative ways in physics teaching and cultivation of talents. The School hosts two post-doctoral research stations, in Physics and in Electronics Science. The former has been recently honored as a "National Excellent Post-Doctoral Research Station."
