Ukraine KIPT electron linac delivered

2013-03-26

On March 13, the first batch of components for the 100 MeV/100 kW electron linac was shipped to the Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology (KIPT), Ukraine, which marked the completion of the R&D of the electron linac by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP).

Launched in February 2012, this neutron source project is an Argonne National Laboratory, USA and NSC KIPT Joint project in Ukraine. It is a neutron source based on a subcritical assembly driven by a 100 MeV/100 kW electron linac which will be designed and constructed at IHEP, China.

The design and construction of such a linac with a high average beam current, low emittance and low beam power loss is a challenging technical task. The second batch of the linac will be shipped to Ukraine in the end of March. IHEP technicians will be sent to KIPT for the assembling and commissioning of the linac. It is estimated that the whole linac could be fully installed and run by Ukrainian scientists by the end of this year.
