Accelerating your dreams, experiencing the micro-world
The 8th Public Science Day activities were held at the Institute of High Energy Physics on May 20. The theme of the Day was "Accelerating your dreams, experiencing the micro-world". On the Day, people were invited to experience the mysteries of the micro-world and share the glories of science.
At 8:30, JIANG Xiaoming, Associate Director of IHEP opened a welcome ceremony by introducing to the visitors the scientific activities at IHEP. CAO Jun, one of the chief scientists with the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment gave a talk on the newly-discovered neutrino oscillation from the Experiment.
IHEP opened five laboratories and one research center to the public on the Day, when visitors could have a chance to see the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, CAS Key Laboratories for Nuclear Analytical Techniques and for Biomedical Effects of Nanomaterials and Nanosafety, IHEP Key Laboratory for Particle Astrophysics and Computing Center.
Another highlight of the Day that attracted the eye of visitors was the exhibition of the scientific achievements. Through the exhibition, people could have a vivid and close look at the scientific progresses with their own eyes. Prof. PEI Guoxi was invited to give a talk on his tutor, Prof. XIE Jialin, who won the 2012 National Top Science Award.
Over 2,000 visitors from middle schools, research institutions and universities in Beijing came to IHEP on the Day. It is a good response from IHEP to the call of holding scientific activities for the public, which aims to inspire young people to explore the unknown and to learn from the distinguished scientists.
