The Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) held its 2012 Workshop on Strategic Planning from March 29 to 31, in Beijing. The theme of the workshop was to discuss plans for scientific activities at IHEP during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan.

CAE Academician Chen Senyu chaired the workshop, and stressed its significance at the beginning. He hoped that a consensus could be reached on how to realize the planned scientific goals during the Twelfth Five-Year Plan.

Prof. WANG Yifang, Director of IHEP delivered a key-note speech, in which he outlined plans for IHEP’s future development. By comparing IHEP with some internationally-renowned institutes, WANG pinpointed IHEP’s future position and orientation, which will be a large international multi-disciplinary research center. He listed the key tasks that would take collective efforts to finish.

Active discussions were made. Leading members of the research divisions, administrative departments and key scientific projects delivered their plans and voiced their opinions on talent training, funding and resources, management and logistic support.

To summarize the workshop, Prof. WANG emphasized the importance of innovation, which is built upon relentless pursue of academic knowledge. While facing intense competition from both home and abroad, we must utilize our wisdom and efforts to make greater achievements in the future.
