Prof. Shin-ichi Kurokawa won CAS Award for International Scientific Cooperation

2012-01-31

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) announced on January 19 that Shin-ichi Kurokawa, professor emeritus at KEK,

 Prof. Shin-ichi Kurokawa
Japan, won the 2011 CAS Award for International Scientific Cooperation. The award is designed for those who make outstanding contributions to encouraging longer-term international partnership among scientists and a global networking for excellent research.

Prof. Kurokawa is a world-famous particle accelerator expert. He took charge of the KEK Accelerator Laboratory in 2001 and has played an important role in the design, construction and operation of several KEK accelerators, including the KEK B-factory.

Over the past decades, Prof. Kurokawa has continuously dedicated his time and efforts to promote collaboration between Japan and China. He used to be an important member of the Machine Advisory Committee for the Upgrading of the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider and provided many valuable comments and suggestions. By initiating the “Core-university Cooperative Program” between the Japanese and the Chinese research institutions, he had funded hundreds of Chinese visitors to Japan and many key research items such as the development of superconducting cavities, and so on.

Kurokawa always says “strengthening the relationship among Asian countries such as China, Korea, India and Japan is crucial for accelerator science to be more actively pursued.”. His conviction motivated him to promote numerous collaborative research programs within Asia.

On January 16, Prof. Kurokawa visited the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) and had a pleasant party with his old friends at IHEP.
