International work groups set up in LHAASO project
The Institut de Physique Nucléaire d'Orsay held the third Workshop for Air Shower Detection at High Altitudes from October 6 to 7, 2011 in Paris.
48 scientific researchers from eight countries reported on the research progress in the related high altitude experiment and discussed the physics objective, experiment arrangement and international collaboration of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) Project.
Three special sessions covering high energy gamma-ray astronomical observation, high energy cosmic rays experiment and air shower detector R&D were arranged in the workshop. Prof. Masahiro Teshima, the spokesperson of MAGIC experiment introduced the status of VHE gamma ray astronomy and recent research highlights. He pointed out that the research of Fermi bubbles, crab pulsar, multi-wavelength observation and distant sources would be the main topics in the future high energy gamma ray astronomy experiment.
Prof. Andreas Huangs, Spokesman for KASCADE and KASCADE-GRANDE experiment illustrated the cosmic ray research and recent research highlights. Chinese participants introduced the research progress of air shower detector and electronics in LHAASO project.
During the meeting, officials from the Institut de Physique Nucléaire d'Orsay met with Chinese participants. Both sided explored the future collaboration in LHAASO project. LHAASO collaborators decided to establish special international work groups under this project.
In the recent years, the interest on astroparticle physics experiments using air shower detection techniques at high altitudes has strongly increased. The ARGO-YBJ experiment has been publishing exciting observational results, the HAWC water tank array and muon detectors in the ASγ array are currently under construction and the R&D for the LHAASO project is already well advanced. The workshop was initiated by the Institute of High Energy Physics, and the first two workshops were held in Beijing. .
The CSNS held its Third Review Meeting of the International Advisory Committee at the Institute of High Energy Physics experts visit the CSNS prototypes (IHEP) from September 22 to 24, 2011. A group of 19 experts from world-renowned institutes reviewed the design of CSNS accelerator, target station and instrument systems, including Wu-Tsung Weng from BNL, Ian .Anderson, John D.Galambos, Thomas.Hardek, Tom McManamy, Phillip D. Ferguson from ORNL, Steve.Holmes from FNAL, C.K.Loong from ANl.
The First International Review Meeting of the Accelerator Driven Sub-critical System (ADS) Project was held at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) from September 19 to 20, 2011. A panel of 13 experts from home and abroad were invited to this meeting, including Steve Holmes, Sergei Nagaitsev, Robert Kephart from FNAL, Peter N.Ostroumov, from ANL, Wu-Tsung Weng from BNL, Li Derun from LBL.
