Postdoctoral Position on the JUNO-TAO Experiment

2022-11-17
Job description:
Two Postdoc positions are opening at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHEP, CAS), focusing on the JUNO-TAO experiment.

Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO, https://arxiv.org/abs/2005.08745) is a satellite experiment of Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), responsible for providing reference reactor antineutrino energy spectrum to JUNO analyses. With better than 2% (@1MeV) energy resolution, TAO is expected to be the first experiment to observe the fine structures on the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum. The high energy resolution is achieved by combining state-of-the-art SiPMs and a novel low-temperature liquid scintillator. Equipped with 10 square meters of SiPMs, TAO is among the few neutrino/dark-matter experiments with large-scale SiPM applications. Operating at -50 ℃, TAO is the first liquid scintillator detector working at such a low temperature. The detector is under construction and data-taking is expected to start at the beginning of the year 2024.

The successful candidate is expected to play a leading role in the TAO experiment for at least one of the following aspects:
  • SiPM and readout electronic system and instrumentation
  • detector construction, commissioning, and calibration
  • offline software development and data analysis
  • reactor antineutrino spectrum study
and can also take part in JUNO physics research.

The successful candidate will work in the neutrino group of the experimental physics division (EPD) at IHEP. The IHEP-EPD carries out a comprehensive program in neutrino research, including leading the Daya Bay, JUNO, and TAO experiments, and participating in the EXO-200/nEXO experiments. The neutrino group has strong participation in the physics analyses, software developments, and hardware R&Ds of the above projects.

Candidate should have a Ph.D. (or expected soon) in experimental nuclear or particle physics. Experiences with offline software, photosensor and readout system, or data analysis are preferred. Knowledge of the Chinese language is not required.

The position is based at Beijing and comes with an internationally competitive annual salary of 400,000 Chinese Yuan before tax. The initial appointment will be made for two years, with a possible renewal of 1-2 years. The outstanding candidates are also encouraged to apply for research grants hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, or the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC).

Candidates should submit applications including a curriculum vitae, a statement of research interest and plan, and a list of publications, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly to Prof.CAO Guofu (caogf@ihep.ac.cn) and Prof.LI Yichen (liyichen@ihep.ac.cn). The selection of candidates for interviews will begin immediately and continue until the positions get filled.
