Introduction to High Energy Photon Source (HEPS)

HEPS, the first 4th generation synchrotron in Asia, is the first greenfield high energy 4th generation synchrotron in the world. HEPS features 6GeV storage ring energy, <40pm.rad emittance, and 1360 m ring circumference. It will accommodate more than 70 beamlines. HEPS is being built by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). HEPS is located in Huairou Science City (HSC), Beijing. Ground-breaking for HEPS was on June 29, 2019. Beamline commissioning will start in early 2024 and HEPS will be open to users in 2025.

Description of Positions

Phase I includes 14 beamlines and one test beamline. Preparation for phase II beamlines will be initiated.

  1. Preferred Directions

  Beamline Instrumentation and Methodology

• Frontier methodology development in coherent imaging and scattering, inelastic scattering, high energy X-ray scattering and diffraction and imaging, nano-imaging, spectroscopy
• Cutting edge scientific beamline instrumentation development
• State-of-the-art application research, especially exploiting features of coherence, brightness and high energy X-rays

  Beamline Engineering

• Optical design and coherence transport
• Adaptive optics
• Off-line and on-line X-ray metrology
• Mechanical and thermal design and analysis
• Fine mechanics

  Control, Computing and Data Analysis

• Automated experimental control
• Big data handling and AI application
• High performance computing
• Algorithm and software development

  2. Positions and Requirements

  I. Full Professors

• Professor or equivalent position from a well-known overseas university or research institute. Exceptional candidates with an associate professor or equivalent position are also qualified to apply.
• Principal Investigator or key contributor to research projects with significant achievements.
• Preferably under age 50

  II. Associate Professors – Class A*

• Need to apply for the Overseas Excellent Young Scientists Fund, sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China
• Ph.D. degree
• Formal position and at least three years of continuous work experience at a well-known overseas university or research institute. Length of work experience negotiable for an exceptional candidate with a Ph.D. degree obtained overseas.
• Significant scientific achievements, potential international influence, leadership ability
• Under age 40

  III. Associate Professors – Class B

• Ph.D. degree
• At least three years of continuous work experience at a well-known overseas university or research institute. Length of work experience negotiable for an exceptional candidate.
• Significant scientific achievements
• Under age 40

  IV. Special Experts program*, 2-3 year term, continuation available

• Need to apply for CAS President's International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI) for Special Experts, Chinese Academy of Sciences
• Ph.D. degree
• Special expertise required for HEPS project

  V. Postdocs

• Ph.D. degree obtained within last three years
• Under age 35

• Proficiency in English (working languages are Chinese and English)
