The Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), the Chinese Academy of Sciences was founded on the basis of the First Division of the Institute of Atomic Energy in 1973. Up to September, 2008, IHEP has a staff of 1,062, among whom 744 are scientists and engineers, 334 held senior titles.

According to the general goal of the “Knowledge Innovation Project”, IHEP has defined three key fields: particle physics research, research and development of advanced accelerator technologies and advanced radiation technology and its applications.

By playing into full play the comprehensive advantages of the three key disciplines, IHEP aims at the national strategic needs and the frontiers of science, striving to produce more innovative results. Meanwhile, by cultivating new growth points, IHEP actively develops cross-disciplinary research.

IHEP is the largest fundamental research institution in China. As mentioned above, particle physics, accelerator physics and technologies, radiation technologies and application are the three main research fields of IHEP that include the following:

Particle physics experiments: BES
