2nd Annual Meeting of China-Brazil Joint Laboratory for Synchrotron Science and Technology Successfully Held in Beijing
From September 14 to 18, the 2nd Annual Meeting of the China-Brazil Joint Laboratory for Synchrotron Science and Technology (CBJSync), jointly built by China’s High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) and Brazil’s Sirius Light Source, was successfully held in Huairou, Beijing. The event marks a solid step forward in deepening bilateral strategic cooperation in the field of fourth-generation synchrotron radiation technologies.
DONG Yuhui, Executive Deputy Director of the HEPS Project, and Harry Westfahl Jr., Director of the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS), attended the meeting and delivered opening remarks. Both leaders reviewed and fully recognized the fruitful cooperation progress achieved over the past year. Since the official establishment of CBJSync in 2025, the two sides have carried out frequent personnel exchanges and substantive technical collaboration, including joint equipment research and development. Serving as an important academic and coordination platform, the annual meeting focused on reviewing HEPS construction progress and technological achievements, clarifying future research priorities, and promoting deeper and more systematic bilateral cooperation.
The conference included plenary sessions and specialized technical parallel sessions. Researchers from China and Brazil conducted in-depth discussions covering insertion devices, radiofrequency systems, opto-mechanics, optical design, X-ray detectors, AI for Science (AI4S), and project management. A new list of joint cooperation projects was finalized through collective deliberation. During the event, the International Cooperation Office, established with the support of the CAS International Cooperation Pilot Project, was put into use for the first time, providing office support for Brazilian scientists.
Meanwhile, a formal equipment handover ceremony, funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) Science and Technology Partnership Program, was held at the HEPS site. The subcooled liquid nitrogen cold box and monochromator crystals developed by HEPS passed comprehensive acceptance and will officially delivered to the Sirius Light Source. The handover represents tangible progress in the technological partnership between the two world-class fourth-generation synchrotron facilities and demonstrates the robust outcomes of China-Brazil synchrotron cooperation.
Andressa Gonçalves Rangel Rodrigues, Head of the Science, Technology and Innovation Section at the Embassy of Brazil in China, attended the ceremony. She congratulated both sides on the successful cooperation achievements and commented that the delivered equipment embodies CBJSync’s continuous efforts in advancing cutting-edge synchrotron technologies and academic exchanges, serving as an outstanding model for science and technology cooperation among BRICS countries.
The establishment of CBJSync is jointly supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST), the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Following the laboratory’s official launch and its first working meeting held in Brazil in June 2025, this annual meeting, supported by the CAS International Cooperation Pilot Project and the HEPS project, marks another key milestone in bilateral academic exchanges. The Chinese delegation included LU Wei, Deputy Director of IHEP, HE Ping, Head of the HEPS Accelerator Division, TAO Ye, Deputy Head of the HEPS Beamline Division, and other core HEPS research and engineering staff, as well as PIFI Fellow Prof. Yoshiharu Sakurai. The Brazilian delegation was led by Lucas Sanfelici, Head of Beamline Engineering at LNLS, Renan Geraldes, Principal Engineer, together with other key researchers from Sirius.

The 2nd annual meeting of CBJSync Lab was held at HEPS.

The opening of the 2nd annual meeting of CBJSync Lab chaired by TAO Ye.

A series of talks and discussions were convened during the meeting.

The Sirius delegation were given a tour of the HEPS storage ring tunnel.
DONG Yuhui and Harry Westfah Jr. signed the acceptance certificate.
