The 3rd Meeting of the HEPS User Committee were held in Huairou. The committee reviewed the HEPS open operation model.

The Fourth Meeting of HEPS International Advisory Committee held in Beijing.

As the final IAC meeting during the construction phase, the event included a review of the committee's contributions since its establishment in July 2018. The successful meetings have been instrumental in guiding the project from design to its upcoming transition to user operation, and further enhanced international cooperation and exchanges in the field of synchrotron radiation technology. The HEPS management board extends the deepest appreciation to all members and earnest hope that the IAC members will continue to support for HEPS’s growth and progress.

HEPS achieved its historical milestone: it passed the performance acceptance organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences..

The finish of acceptance tests puts HEPS at the top list of the world’s synchrotron X-ray research facilities, marking one generation leap for China’s synchrotron radiation capabilities. Its electron beam emittance achieved 57pm·rad under 100 milliamps beam current. A suite of world-class performance beamlines has been commissioned, such as state-of-the-art the hard x-ray imaging beamline and the structural dynamics beamline.

The Spanish ALBA Synchrotron visited HEPS, and the two parties signed a cooperation agreement on synchrotron radiation research..

This collaboration aims to advance the development of synchrotron science and technology by leveraging the expertise and facilities of both parties, defining the specific collaborative activities and programs between IHEP and CELLS, mainly focusing on three main areas: Accelerator Technology, Experimental Beamline Technology, and Scientific Cooperation.

The China-Brazil Joint Laboratory of Synchrotron Radiation Science and Technology (CBJSync) was established..

The Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), a non-profit organization supervised by Brazil’s Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), and the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) inaugurated the China-Brazil Joint Laboratory for Synchrotron Science and Technology (CBJSync) on June 25, 2025. The initiative marks the beginning of in-person scientific exchange, with Chinese researchers working at the CNPEM campus in Campinas, São Paulo, and Brazilian researchers hosted at the IHEP campus in Beijing. Sponsored by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), MCTI and CAS, the CBJSync represents a significant milestone in the partnership between CNPEM and IHEP—a collaboration formalized in 2023 and supported by both CAS and MCTI.

HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand Visited HEPS..

The Princess first visited IHEP in 2011, when she toured the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, China’s first large science facility. In 2017, she witnessed the signing of cooperation agreements between IHEP and three Thai universities, significantly advancing cooperation in both neutrino and collider experiments. In 2023, IHEP had the honor of receiving the Princess at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) in Guangdong. CAO expressed his hope that the Princess’s fourth visit—to HEPS—would further expand bilateral cooperation in synchrotron radiation light sources and promote friendship between China and Thailand.

HEPS Joint-Commissioning Phase Launched.

The High Energy Photon Source (HEPS), China’s flagship synchrotron radiation facility, has officially begun its joint-commissioning phase after successfully completing photon beam commissioning, the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which developed the facility, announced on March 27 in Beijing.

The Third Meeting of HEPS International Advisory Committee Held in Huairou.

The third meeting of the International Advisory Committee (IAC) for the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) was held in Huairou from Jan. 14 to 16, followed by a dedicated session for HEPS phase II beamlines on Jan. 17. It was chaired by Harald Reichert from DESY and co-chaired by Alex Chao from SLAC. Nineteen IAC members from international institutes and universities, as well as the HEPS project management team, attended the meeting.

The SR X-ray emitted from the R21 wiggler was successfully delivered to the end station of the hard X-ray imaging beamline, 330 meters away from the light source, on October 12, 2024.

The first stored beam with a current of approximately 50 μA and a lifetime of over 10 seconds achieved.

July 23, 2024

The HEPS storage ring commissioning began.
On the same day, electron beams were transmitted through the entire high-energy transport line connecting the booster and the storage ring, and then injected into the storage ring. The whole procedure was completed within two hours. About four hours later, electron beams successfully traveled more than one circle in the storage ring, facilitated by tuning a few correctors near the injection point.

The appraisal result of the HEPS project park planning and architectural design proposal were announced, and the top one plan from the China Electronics Engineering Design Institute, the “Scientific Aircraft Carrier” (later renamed “Microscopic World”), was selected for the feasibility report. The plan was submitted to Chinese Academy of Sciences and Beijing in Oct. 2017 and Jan. 2018 respectively, and was approved by the Beijing Municipal Government in Mar. 2018.
