Date: 2017-12-21 Author:

The CSNS International Advisory Committee held its ninth review meeting on IHEP Dongguan Campus from December 18 to 20, 2017.

16 senior scientists from the world-famous research institutions like Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), European Spallation Source (ESS) and Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), attended the meeting and had serious review on the progress of CSNS.

CSNS Project Director Chen Hesheng gave an overall report on CSNS covering the accelerator, target and spectrometer, facility construction and user cultivation. He also briefly introduced the achievements that CSNS has made in 2017, including obtaining the first neutron beam on August 28, achieving the proton beam pulses with a repetition rate of 25 Hz and an average beam power of more than 10 kW on November 9. Representing the sub-systems, Fu Shinian, Wang Fangwei and Wang Qingbin, also gave reports respectively. The review experts toured the linac and ring tunnel, the target station and instrument hall.

The review experts listened to 20 detailed reports and had thorough discussions and exchanges with the CSNS staff. They concluded that since the last review meeting, the project has made remarkable progress. Valuable suggestions and opinions were put forward on such key issues as transition from construction to operations, user development and radiation safety, especially in development of the next suite of neutron instrumentation and beam power upgrade. Chen Hesheng expressed his hearty thanks to the experts’ review and looked forward to their continued supports in the future.
